Once again, the annual appointment of national architects for the convention kicked Day 0 was kick-off day on April 11, 2018, with meetings at the UAPHQ – the Tripartite Network meeting of the UAP, PRC & CODHASP in the morning and the CODHASP meeting of deans and Heads of Architecture Schools in the afternoon, as well as the Chapter Presidents in an Assembly – and the Arkilympics at the Quezon City Sports Club, during which the architects have pitted against one another in the spirit of camaraderie and good sportsmanship.
Day 1 (April 12, 2018) started with the UAP welcoming the pre-registered-online delegates to claim their registration kits, which number about 3000. With the introduction of the new system to support attendance concerns, the RFID cards assigned to the delegates presented new challenges. This whole process has been a great opportunity to test our character as an organization and as individuals. It was therefore a chance for further learning as they have been well-noted and we know that the rest of the coming days will present us with more. We are up to the challenge!
The Opening Ceremonies came next with a bang, hosted by Ar. Cathy Saldana- Siegel, and the National Board leading the body to commence with the program. And with the convention director Ar. Florencio Sebastian’s welcome address, expounding on what to expect in the next three days, the torch symbolizing the convention was literally ablaze.
Lunch was a welcome break at Function Halls 2-5 and so much more with entertainment by Mr. Pure Energy himself: Gary V! It was a good way to break the ice and usher in the esprit de corps much desired by any organization. Simultaneously, at Functional Hall 1, the College of Fellows had their Luncheon meeting.
Simultaneous events took place at the Convocation of the College of Fellows at Function Hall 1 and Halls 1-4 for the CONEX Opening Ceremonies at 1pm and 1:30pm respectively.
The keynote address has been delivered by Francis J. Kong, one of the most respected business speakers in the country. He is an entrepreneur, a business consultant, a personal coach, a broadcaster, and an author. As a motivational speaker, Francis Kong expounded on the convention theme “Sigasig: A Zeal for Excellence” and explained how the need to develop the culture for excellence is key in proving the architect’s relevance in our ever-increasing competitive industry.
While Mr. Kong’s address was going on, the College of Fellows had their Investiture Ceremonies in the next hall during which 12 new fellows have been invested. It was a solemn way of honoring architects in practice, government service and the academe.
This day has been put to an end in an Honor Dinner, graced by the Guest Honor, Fellow Ar. Abelardo “Jojo” Tolentino who delivered a most inspiring address on what excellence is: that it does not happen by accident, that it sets you up for further excellence, that it is a daily decision and that we need to constantly improve.
